Today is Derrick L. Hilton Sr. Day 2026 in the Socastee Cluster and Ten Oaks Elementary. It is the 4th October that our area has been without Coach Hilton, our former Head Basketball Coach, Guidance Counselor, 1998 Lower State Basketball Champion and Graduate of Socastee High School. Our new Principal, Dr. Schubiger has a motto, Every Brave, Every Day, Every Opportunity, and that is fitting of the life Coach Hilton lived. There aren’t many Braves left who had the privilege to know Coach Hilton, but when you hear that saying, just know that is who he was. Derrick was kind to all and wanted success for anyone he could help. For those of us who knew him, DLH Sr. day is a great opportunity to share stories of his humor, his talents and his kindness. For those who never met Coach Hilton, he was that 1 person you could always trust, he made you feel better on a rough day or if you needed help it didn’t matter what time it was, he would be there.
