
Week 1 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Christian Royals, Varsity Football. Christian had 2 TD passes against Aynor in the the CNB Kick off classic Friday night. Christian has chosen to recognize his Pre-Calc teacher Mr. Melko. He says Mr. Melko is just an all around helpful person and takes an interest in his students in and out of the classroom. Mr. Melko is just an awesome guy!

Pools and Palms Week 2 Athlete of the Week is Max Duke, Men’s Volleyball. Max has been a huge part of the early success for the Men’s Volleyball team. They finished 4-1 and took second place at the Byrnes Spikefest Tournament. Max stepped up and has taken on the role of setter and helped the team to their very first win over rival CF. Max has chosen to recognize Mrs. Lange his English 1 Honors and English 2 Honors teacher. Max says Mrs. Lange was a terrific teacher and she puts a lot of effort into her students and makes sure to show interest in them beyond the classroom. She makes English and exciting class.

Pools and Palms Week 3 Athlete of the Week is Nathan Ludeman, Men’s Swimming. He led off the 200 Medley Relay, which got an Automatic Q time. He swam the 200 Free and got an Automatic Q Time in that. In the 100 Back he improved the Automatic Q time, which he already had, by a full second. In the 200 Free Relay, he anchored them to a time that is only 0.37 seconds off the Q time! Nathan has chosen to recognize Coach Kelley French whom he says has been a terrific coach and very supportive of her athletes.

Pools and Palms Week 4 Athlete of the Week is Layla Holladay, Cross Country. At the Wilmington Beach Blast Layla placed 1st in the Varsity girls race with a time of 20:25 out of 101 girls. Layla has chosen to recognize Mr. Alexander her AP US History teacher. Layla says Mr. Alexander loves teaching, and he has a passion for teaching and makes each semester an amazing experience for all his students. He also supports the students who participate in extracurricular activities.

Week 5 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Brayden Hodge, Golf. Braden had a 2nd place, silver medal finish at the Special Olympics Golf Championships. Braden has chosen to recognize Mrs. Brauner. He says Mrs. Brauner is so nice and makes it fun to come to school every day. He also has recognized his dad, Coach Steve Hodge. Coach Hodge has shown compassion and great coaching for decades here at SHS. He has helped mold 100’s to 1,000’s of students and athletes, including his two older children. It is awesome to see his huge smile for his youngest child Brayden, bringing home the Silver Medal to SHS.

Pools and Palms Week 6 Athlete of the Week, Landen Christensen, Men’s Swimming. Landen has been a huge part of a terrific Men’s Swim team. Landen is the only swimmer in recent history to attain an Automatic State Qualifying cut but not be a Year Round swimmer!!! Logan has chosen to recognize Mrs. Beaudry. Logan says Mrs. Beaudry is jus terrific as a teacher but more so as a champion of her students. She backs every single kid she teaches and they know how much she cares.

Pools and Palms Week 7 Athlete of the Week, Miller Locklear, JV Football. Miller has had an outstanding 9th grade campaign for the undefeated JV football team, including a game winning kickoff return. Miller chose to recognize his Science teacher, Mr. French. He says Mr. French makes Science fun and shows an interest in his student athletes.

Pools and Palms Week 8 Athlete of the week is Logan Mendieta, Men’s Swimming. Logan had a great day at the Region Swim Meet. He won 2 individual championships and a relay championship, which helped the team win the Region Title. Logan has chosen to recognize staff member Mrs. French. Mrs. French has been a great swim coach and she is a great teacher. Mrs. French has now won 4 Region Titles in a row, way to go Logan and Mrs. French.

Pools and Palms Week 9 Athlete of the week is Ivan Ni. Ivan has been working extremely during this volleyball season. He has been playing multiple positions throughout the entire season and does a phenomenal job in every spot on the court. He is someone who the team can continuously count on to get the job done and help us achieve our goals!

Pools and Palms Week 10 Athlete of the week is Maya Patel. Maya has been working extremely hard during this golf season. She earned All-Region honors, finished 2nd in the Lower State Tournament, and qualified for the AAAAA D2 Tournament next week. Maya chose Coach Shoemaker as her faculty member for always being there for her and being a great motivator.

Week 11 Pools and Palms Athlete’s of the Week are Elijah Owens and Hayes Hardwick, Varsity Football. The two varsity football players were crucial to a dominant homecoming win over the Conway Tigers last Friday night. Elijah had 31 carries for 146 yards and 1 TD as well as 3 two point conversions. Hayes had 3 catches for 105 yards with a long of 46 yards a TD. Hayes has chosen to recognize staff member Melissa Hardwick who he appreciates as a huge fan of his. Mrs. Welch has been cheering on Hayes his entire life. Elijah chose to recognize Mr. Mol, his English teacher, who he says actively supports him in class and on the field and he keeps up with all of his accomplishments. He also makes English fun along with Ms. Watts.

Week 12 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Jase Wethington, State Champion Men’s Volleyball. Jase Wethington has shown strong leadership both on and off the volleyball court this season. His competitive energy sets the tone for the team’s performance. Jase consistently leads by example, demonstrating teamwork, and determination. His ability on the court and his leadership have been key factors in helping his team achieve success this season. Jase has chosen to recognize Miss Eudy, his former math teacher and athletic supporter. Jase says Miss Eudy was a terrific teacher and she has followed all his athletics accomplishments, that she is interested in all her students. Congrats Jase and Miss Eudy.

Week 13 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Layla Holladay, Women’s Cross Country. Layla competed at the State Qualifier Cross Country race Saturday in Newberry, SC. She placed 6th overall in her race which earned her a bid to the State Championship as an individual. Layla has chosen to recognize her Strength and Conditioning Coach, Coach Little. Layla says Coach Little has been a terrific weight training teacher and he is a huge supporter of his athletes. He has made a difference in her performance.

Week 14 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Sienna Neuman, Varsity Cheer. Sienna has had a solid with standing tumbling that has landed consistently. She also has saved multiple stunts and performed a clean, zero deduction routine. Sienna has chosen to recognize Mrs. Lewis her former Business courses teacher. Sienna says that Mrs. Lewis is a terrific teach, but what makes her stand out to Sienna is that she is a safe person for her to talk with about anything and she is always for her and all of her students.

Week 15 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Bri Smith, Varsity Women’s Basketball. Bri had 33 total points (16 & 17), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 6 steals, and 6 deflections in wins against Manning and Loris in the M-Town Showdown Showcase. Bri has chosen once again to recognize her former Math teacher, Dr. Kirk. Bri says Dr. Kirk is a big reason she still plays basketball and views him as a staff member who is easy to talk with and does a great job offering wisdom. Dr. Kirk was also a great Math teacher for Bri. Congrats Bri and Dr. Kirk.

Pools and Palms Week 16 Athlete of the Week is Eric Light, Varsity Wrestling. Eric Light had a great start to the Wrestling season opening up week 1 with an 8-1 record. He has won 7 of those matches by pinfall and has scored a total of 48 team points helping the Braves win 3rd place overall at the Waccamaw Invitational and finishing the week with a 7-3 overall record. Eric has chosen tot recognize Coach Gibby. Eric says Gibby drives him to be his best and never lets him settle for the level he is at.

Pools and Palms Week 17 Athlete of the Week is Rylee Minehart, Varsity Women’s Basketball. Rylee Minehart had 42 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 blocks, 5 steals, and 8 deflections with only 5 turnovers as the Lady Braves won 3 out of 4 games this past week. Rylee has chosen to recognize Dr. Ingersoll. Rylee says Dr. Ingersoll goes out of his way to listen to her, ask how her classes are going and he takes interest in all students at SHS and what they are doing.

Pools and Palms Week 17 Athlete of the Week is Michael Davis, Varsity Wrestling. Michael is a newer wrestler that has been working hard this season to find some success on the mat. The work has started to pay off as he has recorded his first four wins of the season this week. He won 2 matches at the very competitive US Army Shark Invitational at May River High School on Monday and Tuesday and followed it up with 2 more wins at the Knights Open Individual at Stratford High School on Saturday morning. Michael has chosen to honor staff member Coach Hodge. Michael states that Coach Hodge is a positive influence on his decision making. Coach Hodge is someone he values and he supports Michael as a wrestler and person.

Pools and Palms Week 18 Athlete of the Week is Khloe Stoner, Varsity Cheer. Khloe has shown tremendous perseverance in returning from an injury that forced her to miss most of the football season. During this basketball season, she has demonstrated dedication and drive by supporting her teammates and continually pushing herself to improve in her role as a back spot. Khloe has chosen to recognize Miss Eudy her former Algebra 2 teacher. Khloe states that Miss Eudy has always believed in her, and has always made her feel good about herself. She is a positive influence on Khloe.

Pools and Palms Week 19 Athlete of the Week is Brielle Hubbard, Varsity Women’s Basketball. She had 19 points (10 and 9), 12 rebounds (6 OR, 6 DR), 4 assists, 1 block, 4 steals, and 6 deflections and shot 9 for 10 (90%) from the free throw line in wins against Myrtle Beach and Conway. Brielle has chosen to recognize Ms. Tangires, her art teacher. Ms. Tangires is full of energy and brings that to her art classes. She enjoys supporting her students and she created an excellent Nutcracker display for her door.

Pools and Palms Week 20 Athlete of the Week is Sara Blazer, from the Bravettes. Sara has been a terrific dancer for the Bravettes throughout the Fall and Winter season. Sara has chosen to recognize her English 3 Honors and AP Language teacher Mrs. Leonard. She says Mrs. Leonard is always there to help her and provide encouragement to all facets of life. Congratulations to Sara and Mrs. Leonard.

Pools and Palms Week 21 Athlete of the Week is Michael Kegler, Varsity Wrestling. The record of 144 Varsity Wrestling wins that has been held for 12 years has been broken. That record now belongs to Senior Michael Kegler. After tonight, Michael now stands at 147 wins and counting. He will have a chance to continue setting a new high as team playoffs are set to begin this weekend. Michael has chosen to recognize staff member, Officer John Johnson. Michael says everyday he comes to school, Officer Johnson asks about wrestling and has taken interest in how he is performing. He has been a daily supporter. Congrats Michael and Officer Johnson.

Pools and Palms Week 22 Athlete of the Week is Caroline Williams, Varsoty Cheer..Caroline has shown outstanding dedication to improving her all-around cheerleading skills. From putting in extra time to sharpen her tumbling to being a loud, energetic presence on the sidelines calling cheers, she consistently leads by example. Caroline is always encouraging her teammates and never hesitates to put in the extra work to help make the team better. She is a tremendous asset to our program, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.Caroline chose to honor her Spanish teacher at ATA, Ms. Laura Merediz Congrats Caroline and Ms. Merediz!

Pools and Palms Week 23 Athlete of the Week is Kinley Graves, Women’s Varsity Basketball. Kinley Graveshad 8 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 3 deflections in wins against MB and Conway to help the Lady Braves seal a playoff bid this season. Kinley chose to recognize Mr. MaCleod he former Algebra 2 Honors Teacher. Kinley explained how Mr. MaCleod was an excellent Math Teacher. He is patient and takes his time to make sure his students learn and can show how to do high level math. Mr. MaCleod has always shown an interest in Kinley’s athletic endeavors and she appreciates that.

Week 24 Pools and Palms Athlete of the Week is Joanna Urritia, athletic trainer. Joanna has been a dependable student trainer for several years. She is personable and a terrific worker and young lady. Joanna has been an awesome part of the training staff. Joanna chose to recognize Coach Curtis Hudson. She remarked how positive Coach Hudson is and that he always is supportive of all students here at SHS and at the elementary schools he visits. His attitude is contagious and he can make anyone’s day be a great day.
